What Is a Katana?

Katana is not a material or quality grade

The word katana does not specify tamahagane, carbon content, folding count, composite construction, polish, hamon, maker, age or authenticity. On a modern listing it may be used as a broad product name. What Is a Tachi?

A tachi is an older long-sword form associated especially with the Heian period through the early Muromachi period. Its mounting used suspension fittings so that it hung from the waist with the cutting edge facing downward. Tachi often show more curvature than later katana, although a silhouette alone cannot establish a sword’s historical identity.

Mounting history can change the name used today

Many tachi were shortened or adapted into katana-style mounting when warfare and dress changed. The Kyoto National Museum notes that shortening can remove part or all of an inscription, while the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Sword Culture cautions that former tachi may now be displayed as katana. Ask whether a listing describes the original blade type, the present mounting or both.

What Is a Wakizashi?

Wakizashi is the usual term for a short Japanese sword, commonly placed in the roughly 30.3–60.6 cm range under the one- to two-shaku convention. The Metropolitan Museum describes a wakizashi as a 30–60 cm short sword usually worn with a full-length katana. In later historical contexts, the long-and-short pairing was called a daishō.

Short does not mean “less important”

A wakizashi can have its own workmanship, school history, fittings and collector significance. It may use a different profile or mounting from a long sword, but the category should not be turned into a performance ranking. Blade length is measured as nagasa, not the total length of the sword with handle and scabbard.

What Is an Iaitō?

An iaitō is generally a modern sword-shaped practice weapon for iaidō, the Japanese discipline of studying controlled sword forms. National and regional federations describe training with a wooden sword, an unsharpened iaitō or, for experienced practitioners and under the relevant rules, a live blade. Do not define every iaitō by one material

Many commercial iaitō use a non-ferrous alloy blade, and some makers offer steel or other blunt practice constructions. The material depends on the maker, market, school requirements and local rules. “Iaitō” should not be expanded into “always aluminium-zinc,” “always steel” or “always safe.” Verify the actual material, edge condition, balance, fittings and maker’s instructions.

Iaitō is not a synonym for katana

An iaitō may copy the proportions and mounting vocabulary of a katana, but a historical katana is not automatically suitable for iaidō practice, and a modern iaitō is not automatically a Japanese-made nihontō. Follow the equipment requirements of the instructor or federation, use it only in the intended controlled setting and keep the product’s age and safety information with the purchase record.

Length Boundaries: Useful Convention, Not a Complete Verdict

Why the border cases matter

A blade close to a boundary may be described with qualifiers such as ko- or ō-, or by a historical term that reflects its original use rather than a modern measurement. A shortened tachi can become a katana in present mounting without losing its earlier history. Do not identify a sword from a ruler photograph alone: check the measurement method, tang, mounting and documentation.

History in Brief: From Tachi to Katana and Daishō

The tachi was especially associated with the mounted-warrior context of the Heian and Kamakura eras and was worn suspended edge down. As warfare and dress changed, the edge-up katana/uchigatana became more prominent, particularly from the Muromachi period onward. The shorter wakizashi became the companion in the later daishō convention. This is a broad timeline, not a rule that every blade from one period has one identical shape.

Iaitō belongs to a much later training vocabulary. It is connected with modern iaidō practice, whose formal kata and examination culture are maintained by organisations such as the All Japan Kendo Federation. It should not be inserted into the medieval timeline as though it were an old blade type.

How Collectors Should Check a Listing

  • What is the blade length? Ask for nagasa and the measurement method, not only overall length.

Words such as “combat-style,” “authentic,” “samurai,” “iaitō” or “tachi” can be used loosely in online commerce. Ask the seller to define the word and identify the supporting specification. If the answer is vague, treat the claim as unverified. Do not alter, disassemble or practise with a sword based only on an internet description; follow the maker, instructor and local legal guidance.

They range from one prepared steel body to increasingly divided forge-welded assemblies. These arrangements are separate from folding the steel and from differential hardening, although all three processes can occur in the same blade.

This guide explains all nine names in the widely circulated comparison chart without pretending that a simple diagram can authenticate a historical sword. Actual methods varied by period, region, school and individual smith. Spellings and cross-section drawings also differ among modern references. Modern product labels require evidence: a higher price or a familiar Japanese term is not proof of the structure hidden inside a finished blade.

What Does “Composite” Mean in a Japanese Sword?

In a macro-composite blade, a smith forge-welds prepared pieces so that harder or higher-carbon steel can serve the edge or outer skin while a more ductile material can occupy the core or other regions. The intention is to combine properties that one uneven historical steel billet might not supply everywhere at once.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes a traditional arrangement in which kawagane, the harder outer steel, surrounds shingane, a softer core. Modern neutron imaging has also detected a characteristic Kobuse structure inside a signed historical blade without cutting it apart.

Composite construction is not a guarantee

A design name describes an intended arrangement, not the quality of every weld, heat treatment, geometry or polish. A well-executed simple construction can be more convincing than a poorly executed elaborate one. Historical importance, authenticity and value also depend on evidence far beyond a cross-section name.

Maru: A Single-Steel Blade Body

Why Maru belongs in the comparison

Maru is often called a single-steel or monosteel construction because the blade body is not assembled from a separate soft core and hard jacket. It is the baseline against which the composite arrangements are usually explained. A 2019 neutron-diffraction study concluded that the examined Keicho-era sword was likely made by the Maru method, demonstrating why it is unsafe to assume that every historical Japanese blade contains a soft inserted core.

Maru can still include folding and differential hardening

“Single steel body” does not mean that the starting material was never folded, refined or heat treated. A Maru blade may still show jihada from forging and a hamon from differential hardening. These are different layers of the manufacturing story.

Kobuse: Harder Steel Around a Softer Core

In the simplified Kobuse model, a higher-carbon outer steel wraps around a lower-carbon core. The outer region includes the cutting edge, while the core is intended to provide a more ductile interior. The decisive interfaces are inside the blade. Polish, etching and lighting can reveal surface features, but they cannot reliably map every internal weld. Confirmation may require trustworthy production documentation, specialist examination or nondestructive scientific imaging.

Honsanmai: Edge, Core and Side Plates

A more divided arrangement

Honsanmai is commonly illustrated with a hard edge component, a softer core and separate side steels. This allows the smith to place materials around more than one face of the blade. The exact proportions and terminology can differ among diagrams, schools and sources, so the drawing in this article is intentionally schematic.

Do not confuse Honsanmai with a three-layer kitchen knife

The word sanmai is also used broadly in modern knife making. A commercial three-layer knife and a historical Japanese sword diagram may share a “three-part” idea without sharing the same geometry, process or purpose. Context matters.

Shihozume: A More Enclosed Multi-Part Construction

Edge, sides, spine and core

Shihozume is usually presented as a more enclosed assembly in which distinct steels occupy the edge, sides, spine and core. It is useful for understanding the range of Japanese sword-making concepts, but the number of components should not be turned into a marketing score.

Complexity is not the same as superiority

Every additional interface must be prepared and forge-welded successfully. The finished result still depends on material selection, welding, geometry, heat treatment and polishing. “More layers” and “more pieces” are therefore not automatic evidence of better performance or greater historical authenticity.

Makuri: A Fully Enclosed Core in the Common Diagram

How Makuri differs from the simplified Kobuse drawing

Makuri is commonly drawn with a softer core enclosed more completely by harder outer steel. The name appears in historical-metallurgy literature, and one sectioned early sword showed an outer high-carbon zone and a lower-carbon core consistent with Makuri-kitae or the related Kofuse interpretation.

The distinction between Makuri and Kobuse can become less tidy in real objects than in an infographic. Terminology, the opening of the jacket and the way a section is interpreted may differ across authors. The useful lesson is the evidence for a deliberately different outer zone and core, not the idea that every weld must match one modern icon.

Wariha Tetsu: An Inserted Hard Edge

Wariha Tetsu, also written Wariha-gitae or Wariba in some romanizations, is usually illustrated as a softer or medium-carbon body split from the edge side to receive a harder V-shaped edge insert. The concept places the high-hardness material only where the cutting edge needs it rather than wrapping the whole core.

The name and simplified geometry are useful for comparison, but a chart cannot reveal weld quality, carbon diffusion or the final hardened zone. It should not be treated as a performance guarantee.

Orikaeshi Sanmai: A Folded-Back Three-Part Variant

Orikaeshi Sanmai is commonly shown as a variation of Sanmai in which prepared components are folded or returned around the central region. English diagrams are not fully consistent about its exact boundaries, so the safest explanation is functional: it is a multi-part edge, core and side concept assembled differently from the basic Honsanmai icon.

Here orikaeshi in the construction name should not be used as shorthand for every repeated fold made while refining tamahagane. Billet preparation and final component arrangement remain separate stages.

Gomai: A Five-Part Construction Concept

Gomai literally points to a five-part concept in common English-language construction charts. It is usually drawn with a hard edge and multiple vertical core or side elements. Different secondary sources assign the material grades and boundaries somewhat differently, so this article presents it as a diagram family rather than a single proven universal recipe.

Collectors should ask for the maker’s own cross-section, steel specification and process record when Gomai is used in a modern listing. The name alone does not verify the hidden arrangement.

Soshu Kitae: The Famous Complex Diagram and Its Evidence Limit

Soshu Kitae is widely illustrated as a complex construction with several steels distributed through the edge, sides, spine and inner body. Many popular charts call it a seven-part method and connect it to Masamune or the Soshu tradition.

Do not turn a repeated legend into authentication

The precise seven-part icon and the claim that Masamune used that exact arrangement are repeated far more often than they are demonstrated by object-specific scientific evidence. It is appropriate to explain the diagram, but not to present it as a verified recipe for every Soshu blade or as proof of authorship. Authentication still depends on the blade itself, its workmanship, provenance and qualified appraisal.

Folding, Composite Assembly and Hamon Are Different

Traditional smiths sorted and forge-welded pieces of tamahagane, then repeatedly worked the billet. The process helped distribute carbon and remove or break up impurities in bloomery steel. Differential hardening changes microstructure

During yaki-ire, clay of different thicknesses helps the edge cool faster than the body. The edge can form harder martensite while slower-cooled regions retain softer structures. One blade can involve all three ideas

A smith may fold individual billets, assemble them into a composite blank and then differentially harden the forged blade. That is why the questions “Was it folded?”, “Is it composite?” and “Does it have a real hardened edge?” are related but not interchangeable.

Can You Identify the Construction from Jihada or Hamon?

Not reliably. Jihada records how surface steel was worked; hamon records the hardened-edge boundary as revealed by polish. Neither automatically shows the complete internal cross-section. A decorative etched line, visible layered pattern or product term also does not authenticate a sword as Japanese-made nihonto.

How Scientific Imaging Changes What We Know

Older metallurgical studies often required damaged fragments or sectioned blades. Neutron diffraction and neutron tomography can now reveal phase distributions and internal boundaries nondestructively. One study found evidence consistent with Maru; another reconstructed the Kobuse-like structure of a Norimitsu blade. Together they show that Japanese sword construction must be investigated object by object rather than assigned from a universal legend.

Scientific results still need historical context. A measured blade represents its own period, region, maker and later history. It should not be used to claim that every blade from a broad category was made the same way.

What Modern Buyers and Collectors Should Verify

  • Ask what the term describes: an internal assembly, a surface pattern, a steel grade or a heat-treatment claim.
  • Look for material details: the steels used, their intended locations and whether the maker documents the process.
  • Separate appearance from structure: a patterned surface is not an X-ray of the blade.
  • Judge the complete object: geometry, polish, mounting, fit, current photographs and seller transparency matter alongside steel construction.
  • Do not infer provenance: “Kobuse”, “folded” or “clay hardened” does not by itself prove Japanese origin, age, smith or authentication.

How to Care for a Carbon Steel Katana and Prevent Rust

Short answer: keep a carbon steel katana clean, dry and protected by a very thin, even film of suitable sword oil. Remove fingerprints promptly, inspect the blade regularly, store it in a stable low-humidity place and never attack rust with household abrasives. The right maintenance interval depends on handling, climate, storage and the instructions supplied with the individual sword.

This guide is written for adult collectors caring for modern carbon steel katana replicas. An antique Japanese sword, authenticated nihonto, damaged polish or active rust deserves advice from a qualified sword specialist. Do not disassemble a sword unless its maker specifically designed it for that purpose and provided instructions.

Why Carbon Steel Katana Need Rust Protection

Carbon steel can react with moisture and oxygen. Fingerprints add salts and oils that can remain on the surface after handling, while condensation may form when a cold sword is moved into a warmer, more humid room. A blade can therefore look clean when it is put away and still develop small rust spots later.

The goal of routine care is not to make the blade look wet or heavily coated. It is to remove moisture and contamination, inspect the finish and leave a thin barrier between the steel and the surrounding air. Excess oil can migrate into the saya, collect dust and damage nearby materials, so more oil is not automatically better.

What You Need for Basic Katana Care

  • A stable, uncluttered work area: keep children, pets and other people away while the sword is out of its saya.
  • Clean, soft, lint-free cloths or suitable blade-care paper: keep the cloth used to remove old oil separate from the cloth used for the final pass.
  • Purpose-made sword oil or a manufacturer-approved protective oil: a modern choji-style sword oil is commonly a light mineral oil with a small amount of fragrance. Follow the product instructions.
  • Soft lighting from the side: this makes fingerprints, dry patches, dust and early colour changes easier to see.

Avoid cooking oils, fragranced household oils, silicone-heavy furniture products, abrasive metal polish, sandpaper and scouring pads. Cooking oils can oxidise and become sticky, while abrasive products can permanently alter a polished surface.

How to Clean and Oil a Carbon Steel Katana

  1. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Confirm the blade material, finish and any product-specific restrictions. Coated, coloured or etched surfaces may require different treatment from a plain polished blade.
  2. Prepare the area before drawing the sword. Place all care materials within reach and make sure the blade will not pass near another person or object.
  3. Remove old oil and visible contamination gently. Use a clean lint-free cloth or suitable care paper. Work carefully without pressing against the cutting edge. Do not scrub the blade.

Historical and modern examples vary, so the exact length of the banded area, the placement of the Menuki and the treatment of the crossovers are not identical on every Tsuka.

How to Recognise Good Katate-Maki

  • The central bands should lie close together with no exposed gaps between turns.
  • Tension should remain consistent where the pattern changes from crossovers to the flat spiral.
  • The two ends of the wrap should look balanced even though the centre differs from Hineri-Maki.
  • Menuki and rayskin should be positioned intentionally rather than appearing trapped or misaligned.
  • The wrap should not be judged as simpler merely because it has fewer visible diamonds; clean transitions require careful control.

The name “battle wrap” is useful for recognition, but it should not be treated as proof that any Katate-Maki handle is automatically stronger or historically superior. Materials, tension and the underlying Tsuka construction remain more important than the label alone.

Learning these terms does not instantly make someone an expert, but it provides a much better way to observe, compare and discuss a blade.

2. Kissaki and Boshi: Reading the Point

The kissaki is the point section of the blade. It is normally separated from the main body by the yokote, the transverse ridge or dividing line near the tip. Kissaki vary in length and proportion, and their appearance can strongly influence the character of the entire sword.

The boshi is not the point itself. It is the continuation of the hardened edge pattern into the kissaki. This distinction is important: kissaki describes geometry, while boshi describes the hardened pattern visible within that geometry.

Common boshi descriptions include:

  • Komaru: a relatively small, rounded turn-back near the tip.
  • Omaru: a larger and more rounded turn-back.
  • Midare-komi: an irregular pattern that continues into the kissaki.
  • Hakikake: a brushed or swept appearance, often compared to broom strokes.
  • Yakizume: a boshi that reaches the spine without a clear turn-back.
  • Jizo: a form traditionally compared to the profile of a Jizo figure.

A boshi can be difficult to photograph. Glare near the point, an incorrect viewing angle or an unsuitable polish may hide its shape. For that reason, a single product photograph should not be treated as a complete appraisal.

3. Hada: The Visible Grain of the Steel

Hada, often called jihada, is the visible surface grain created by the organization of the steel during forging. It is not a grain added as surface decoration. On a properly polished blade, the structure may appear as flowing, straight, swirling or layered patterns.

Frequently encountered hada terms include:

  • Itame: an irregular wood-grain pattern.
  • Masame: predominantly straight, parallel grain.
  • Mokume: rounded or swirling forms that resemble burl wood.
  • Ayasugi: a regular, undulating grain pattern.

The visibility of the hada also depends heavily on polish, lighting, surface condition and the fineness of the forging. Rust, stains or an overly harsh polish can obscure features that may still exist within the steel.

4. Hamon: The Pattern Along the Hardened Edge

The hamon is the visible pattern associated with the hardened edge of a traditionally heat-treated Japanese sword. During differential hardening, different areas of the blade cool at different rates. After appropriate polishing, the resulting boundary and crystalline effects become visible along the edge.

Hamon are described by their overall rhythm and shape. Major forms include:

  • Suguha: a largely straight and restrained hamon.
  • Gunome: a repeating sequence of rounded forms.
  • Notare: broad, gentle waves.
  • Choji: shapes traditionally compared to clove blossoms.
  • Sanbonsugi: grouped pointed forms often described as a three-cedar pattern.
  • Midare: an irregular or varied pattern rather than a straight line.
  • Togari: pointed or sharply peaked elements.

These terms can be combined. A description such as choji-midare indicates an irregular hamon containing clove-like forms, while notare mixed with gunome describes rolling waves combined with rounded elements.

A dramatic hamon is not automatically better than a quiet one. Suguha may look simple at first glance yet contain subtle internal activity. The correct question is not merely whether a hamon is large or visually bold, but whether its form, consistency and fine details can be understood as part of the blade as a whole.

5. Hataraki: Activity Within the Blade

Hataraki, often translated as “activities” or “workings,” refers to the fine features visible within and around the hamon and the body of the blade. Under suitable lighting, these may appear as fine lines, streaks, dots, patches or small projections. They result from complex interactions within the steel during hardening and become legible through skilled polishing.

Important terms include:

  • Ashi: narrow projections extending from the hamon toward the cutting edge.
  • Ko-nie: small sparkling particles of nie associated with the hardened area.
  • Ji-nie: fine nie visible in the ji, the main surface above the hamon.
  • Sunagashi: streaks with an appearance traditionally compared to flowing or brushed sand.
  • Kinsuji: bright linear activity running within or near the hamon.
  • Inazuma: short, lightning-like lines.
  • Uchinoke: small crescent-shaped features.
  • Chikei: dark, curved lines visible in the ji.

For beginners, ashi, ko-nie and ji-nie are often comparatively easier to distinguish when the blade is properly polished and viewed under suitable light. Ashi has a characteristic leg-like form extending toward the cutting edge. Ko-nie appears as fine nie particles associated with the hardened area, while ji-nie is identified by its presence in the ji. Other activities are more easily confused, especially sunagashi, kinsuji and inazuma. These three are all associated with linear arrangements of nie-related martensitic structures; their traditional names describe differences in length, direction, shape and visual effect rather than entirely different materials. The boundaries between these classifications are therefore not always absolute.

Hataraki are among the hardest features for beginners to recognize. They can disappear under flat lighting and become visible when the blade is tilted only slightly. This is one reason serious sword study depends on controlled observation rather than a quick front-facing photograph.

How to Examine a Japanese Sword Blade

  1. Use soft directional light. A single light source from the side often reveals more than bright, even illumination.
  2. Change the angle slowly. Rotate the blade or your viewpoint in small increments instead of looking from only one position.
  3. Observe from large to small. Begin with sugata, then examine kissaki and boshi, followed by hada, hamon and fine hataraki.
  4. Keep the surface clean and protected. Fingerprints and excess oil can hide subtle details. Follow appropriate sword-care procedures and avoid touching the polished blade.
  5. Never use abrasive polish. Household metal polish, sandpaper or aggressive cleaning can permanently damage the surface and destroy important visual information.

Confusing Hada with Hamon

Hada is the grain of the forged steel across the blade surface. Hamon is the hardened-edge pattern running near the cutting edge. They may interact visually, but they describe different features.

Treating Pattern Names as Quality Grades

Terms such as suguha, choji, itame and masame describe appearance, not a simple ranking from low to high quality. Evaluation requires workmanship, condition, consistency and context.

Recognizing a pattern is the beginning of observation, not final authentication. Dating or attributing a historical blade requires specialist knowledge and examination of many features together.
