The Japanese sword, or Nihonto, is one of the most recognizable edged weapons in history. Its elegant curvature, precise engineering, and deep cultural meaning raise it far beyond a simple weapon. It is a work of art shaped by function, tradition, and spirit.
To truly appreciate a katana, you first need to understand the names and functions of each part of the blade. This guide walks through the key components from the tip to the tang.
1. Overall Blade Structure
A standard katana blade, or Uchigatana, consists of several main zones: Kissaki (tip), Ha (cutting edge), Shinogi-ji (blade surface), Mune (spine), and Nakago (tang). Each detail reflects many hours of precise work by a trained swordsmith.
2. Ha - The Cutting Edge
Ha is the sharpened cutting edge and the most functionally critical part of the blade. Its extreme hardness comes from the application of Yakibatsuchi, a clay mixture used during Yaki-ire, or hardening. A thinner clay layer along the edge allows faster cooling, creating a hard martensitic steel structure.
3. Hamon - The Soul of the Blade
Hamon is the distinctive wave-like pattern formed along the boundary between the hardened cutting edge and the softer body of the blade. Created during differential hardening, the hamon is not merely decorative. It is an important quality indicator and often reflects the smith's personal style.
Common hamon types include:
- Suguha: A straight, restrained hamon line, often seen in older classical work.
- Midareba: An irregular, wavy pattern with dynamic variation.
- Notare: Broad rolling waves that resemble mountain ranges.
- Choji: Clove-flower-shaped waves, strongly associated with the Bizen tradition.
- Gunome: Repeating semicircular patterns with a strong rhythmic character.
4. Ji - The Blade Surface
Ji refers to the surface area of the blade above the hamon. Through repeated folding and forge welding, the steel develops a subtle surface grain known as Jihada.
- Itame: A wood-grain-like pattern, one of the most common types.
- Masame: Straight, parallel grain lines.
- Nashiji: A fine granular texture resembling pear skin.
- Ayasugi: A regular wave-like grain associated with certain traditions.
5. Shinogi - The Ridge Line
Shinogi is the longitudinal ridge that runs along the blade and divides the thicker upper Shinogi-ji from the lower cutting surface. This ridge gives the blade structural strength while helping reduce overall weight.
6. Mune - The Spine
Mune is the back edge of the blade. Depending on the cross-section, several forms exist:
- Iorimune: The most common peaked spine, sloped symmetrically on both sides.
- Mitsumune: A three-sided spine with a small flat top surface.
- Marumune: A rounded, arched spine, relatively rare.
7. Kissaki - The Art of the Tip
Kissaki is the pointed tip section of the blade. Its size, length, and shape can help date a blade and identify its school or intended function.
- Okissaki: A large, elongated tip often seen on powerful historical blades.
- Chukissaki: A medium-sized tip and the most common form.
- Kokissaki: A compact tip, often seen on shorter blades.

8. Yokote - The Tip Dividing Line
Yokote is the transverse line that separates the kissaki from the main body of the blade. A clean, straight yokote is a sign of careful craftsmanship and proper polishing.
9. Boshi - Hamon Inside the Kissaki
Boshi is the continuation of the hamon into the kissaki area. The way the boshi turns back or ends near the tip is important for studying and authenticating Japanese swords.
- Komaru: A small rounded turn-back, one of the most classical forms.
- Omaru: A larger rounded turn-back.
- Yakizume: A hamon that stops without a clear return.
- Jizo: A form resembling the head of a Jizo statue.
- Togari: A pointed boshi ending.
10. Nakago - Hidden History in the Tang
Nakago is the tang of the blade that fits into the handle, or Tsuka. Although usually hidden, it preserves critical information.
- Mei: The smith's signature, often including name, place, or date.
- Mekugi-ana: Holes for bamboo pegs that secure the blade to the handle.
- Yasurime: File marks such as kiri, sujikai, or osujikai.
- Nakagojiri: The shape of the tang end, such as kurijiri, kenjiri, or iriyamagata.
11. Blade Classification by Length
Japanese swords are traditionally classified by blade length, or Nagasa:
- Tachi: Over 60 cm, traditionally worn edge-down and associated with cavalry use.
- Katana / Uchigatana: Over 60 cm, worn edge-up and widely associated with the samurai of the Edo period.
- Wakizashi: Between 30 and 60 cm, often paired with a katana as part of the daisho.
- Tanto: Under 30 cm, used for close-range and ceremonial purposes.
12. What to Look for When Buying a Katana
When evaluating a katana for purchase, pay attention to these blade details:
- Is the hamon natural? Authentic clay hardening produces a flowing, organic hamon. Chemically etched imitation hamon often looks stiff or artificial.
- Is the yokote well defined? A crisp, clean yokote line signals careful polishing and high-level craftsmanship.
- Can you see the jihada? A traditionally forged blade may show a fine, visible grain texture on the surface.
- Is the nakago intact? Signatures, file marks, and patina on the tang are important for dating and authentication.
- Does the overall sugata fit the style? The blade's curvature and silhouette should match the style and period it represents.
